What to check on the label

• The ingredient list, not the front label. Pure JBCO lists one ingredient: castor oil (Ricinus communis seed oil), sometimes noted as roasted or traditionally processed. If lighter carrier oils, fragrance, or essential oils appear, it is a blend — fine, but you are buying something different.
• "Extra dark" is a roast level, not a strength claim. Longer roasting darkens the oil and deepens the scent. There is no evidence that darker oil performs differently on hair.
• Origin wording. "Jamaican-style" or "Jamaican black" describes the roasting method; it does not guarantee the beans were grown or pressed in Jamaica. Some brands state origin plainly — that transparency is worth preferring.
• Bottle material and spout. Thick, dark oil is messy to dispense. Flip-top caps and squeeze bottles are easier to control than wide-mouth jars.
